Be Submissive, 1st Peter 2:13-25

1st Peter 2:13-17 NIV Virtues Bible published in 2021 by Zondervan

Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as supreme authority, or to governors, who are being sent by him to punish those who do wrong and commend those who do right. For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people. Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves. Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.

Define submission and the act of being humble from a dictionary and then compare the two words in the context of the passage in 1st Peter 2:13-17. Can the words submission and being humble be used in exchange for each other? If so, why?

In the light of these words submission and being humble, how can you as a believer demonstrate these virtues to everyone?

Are there any situations in your life over the past month, week, or day that you find it difficult to submit and be humble in? List them and then ask God to show how to demonstrate these virtues in the situations which you listed. Take some time right now to reflect over these things and then follow what God tells you to do.

Read 1st Peter 2:16-25 in the ESV , why does the ESV address “God’s slaves” as “God’s servants”?

Write out 1st Peter 2:18 and in the context of this passage who is being addressed here and how has this passage of scripture along with others about submission and slaves been taken out of context and list the ways these verses have been used?

Close today’s time in the word with a time of both giving praise to the LORD as well as any new insight that the LORD gave you about this passage and how to apply it to your own life
