A Date with God

Do you take time to sit in the stillness of the Lord’s presence? Do you sit patiently at the Lord’s feet just as Mary did so long ago while Martha worked hard serving? (See Luke 10:32-41) Do you wait for the Lord to speak to you on a daily basis?

If you are like me, then you may want to schedule your day so that you can do this. If you are like me and work outside the home for any length of time, then it might work for you to schedule a daily time with the Lord. I like calling my times with the Lord, “A Date with God”. I would post it on my calendar or on the refrigerator at home, which reminds me I need to do this again, so I can see the reminder to spend time with the Lord.

What does ” A Date with God” look like exactly, I will tell you how mine began and how it has changed over time and sometimes its inconsistent, but then the God will nudge me from time to time to spend time with HIM.

It was about 17 years ago, I would go out for breakfast and sit by myself in order to just be quiet and picture in my mind Jesus siting across from me. As I would eat my breakfast, in my mind I would focus on Him and pray. Then this time grew to include getting quiet at home, sing worship songs that I knew without the music, then I began writing my praise poetry in 2005 as well as pray in tongues that is best described as a God-given language and not one that is acquired through learning.

As I have been thinking back on my “Dates with God” there were times that I felt distant from HIM although the distance was only there because I made it that way with HIM.

Let’s take a moment and read Romans 8:1-37 and then reflect on it with the following questions.

  1. What is your mind focused on right now that keeps you from having “A date with God”?
  2. Do you need to use an hourly calendar to prioritize your activities so that you can have ” A Date with God”?
  3. Do you feel distant from GOD if so, explain why?
  4. Do you believe that you are His child, if so, explain why?

Fill in the Blank for Romans 8:1-2 ESV

There is therefore ______ condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life _________________________________ in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

If you feel distant or it is hard for you to find time to get to know and hear from God on a daily basis then I encourage you to use an hourly calendar to schedule time with GOD! Write out Romans 8:1 ESV each day or week as you set your scheduled. Remember that the schedule time is not a law but it is an opportunity to spend some time with the LORD and he will gently remind you to spend time with HIM.
