Isaiah, A Study

Background for the study of Isaiah will focus on the days in which prophet Isaiah lived and gave his prophetic visions concerning the kingdom of Judah and its capital Jerusalem. We will read the accounts of the days of the following kings of Judah: Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah.

Now let’s begin by reading about King Uzziah found in 2nd Chronicles 26:1-24 in the English Standard Version and compare it with either the New King James Version or the New Living Translation.

Answer the following after reading 2nd Chronicles 26:1-24

How old was Uzziah when he became king of Judah and whom did he succeed as king?

How long did Uzziah reign and until what age did he reign as king in Judah?

Did Uzziah do what is right in the eyes of the Lord and list what he did?

Let’s read 2nd Chronicles 26:5 in the ESV below:

He set himself to seek God in the days of Zechariah, who instructed him in the fear of God, and as long as he sought the LORD, God made him prosper.

“He was instructed in the fear of God” what does this mean to you personally and how have you prospered by seeking the Lord in your own life?

Who did Uzziah make war against and what was the result?

What cities did he build and who helped him defeat those he made war against?

What was King Uzziah’s sin and punishment? see 2 Chronicles 26:16-24.

Now Jotham, becomes King of Judah. 2 Chronicles 27:1-9

Jotham was 25 when he became king and how long did he reign?

Did Jotham do what was right in the eyes of the LORD and what did he not do?

Did the people of Judah follow Jotham in doing what was right in the LORD’s eyes and why?

Why did Jotham become mighty?

Read 2 Chronicles 28 and answer the following about King Ahaz

Did Ahaz follow the LORD and list what he did.

What was the result of King Ahaz and his actions?

Read 2 Chronicles 29 and answer the following

Did Hezekiah follow the ways of the Lord and list all that he did.

What did Hezekiah restore and was the LORD pleased?

Now, go back and turn and read Isaiah Chapter 1. Write a brief summary of this chapter and reflect on all the things that the Kings of Judah did and the people’s response.
